Will I get antibiotics for laryngitis?

No. Acute laryngitis in a healthy adult is almost always viral, and the evidence (a Cochrane review and the AAO-HNS Hoarseness guideline) shows antibiotics do not help and add side effects and resistance. This visit focuses on voice rest and proven symptom relief, and suspected strep throat is sent to testing rather than treated blindly.

What can this visit provide?

Voice rest and supportive-care guidance plus targeted over-the-counter and non-controlled options: acetaminophen or ibuprofen for throat pain, guaifenesin for thick mucus, a single dextromethorphan product for a dry cough, a bounded omeprazole trial only when there are clear reflux symptoms, and fluticasone nasal spray for allergy/postnasal drip. A non-controlled prescription cough suppressant (benzonatate) may be offered when appropriate. No antibiotics and no controlled medicines are prescribed, and an oral steroid burst is not a routine option.

When is hoarseness an emergency, and when does it need an in-person exam?

Call 911 for trouble breathing, noisy high-pitched breathing, a feeling of the throat closing, drooling or inability to swallow saliva, neck swelling with fever, a rapidly worsening throat pain that is worse lying flat, coughing up blood, or lip/tongue/throat swelling with hives or wheezing. See a clinician in person if hoarseness lasts 3 weeks or longer, keeps coming back, occurs in a current or former smoker or heavy drinker, or comes with a neck lump, trouble swallowing solids, or weight loss — these need a look at the voice box.
