How is pinworm treated?

The usual treatment is a weight-based dose of an over-the-counter deworming medicine (pyrantel pamoate) taken once now and repeated in about two weeks, because a second dose clears worms that hatch after the first. Treating the whole household at the same time and washing bedding and clothing in hot water helps prevent reinfection.

Can a child be treated?

Yes. Children age 4 and older can be treated with a parent or guardian completing the visit and entering the child's weight so the over-the-counter dose is correct.

When should pinworm be seen in person instead?

Please seek in-person or emergency care for severe belly pain, a swollen rigid belly, trouble passing stool or gas, green or bloody vomiting, rectal bleeding, or a high fever with belly pain. Symptoms that are not typical of pinworm, such as weight loss or ongoing diarrhea, also need an exam.
