Typical external genital warts can sometimes be treated from a careful history and clear photos. The physician must confirm both appearance and external location before prescribing; this visit never treats a lesion inside the anus, vagina, cervix, urethra, or urinary opening.

Only typical lesions (spots) on the outside skin. Skin around the outside of the anus can qualify, but anything inside the anus or another body opening needs an in-person exam. Lesions that are atypical (unusual looking), pigmented (having color in them), ulcerated (open sores), painful, bleeding, firm, fixed (stuck in place), or growing fast are also sent to in-person care.
The physician may choose generic podofilox, usually applied twice daily for 3 days followed by 4 days off for up to four cycles, or imiquimod, usually applied at bedtime three nights a week for up to 16 weeks. Local burning or inflammation is common, so normal skin and all internal tissue must be avoided.
No. Treatment removes visible warts but does not eradicate HPV or guarantee that transmission cannot occur. Recurrence is possible, and HPV vaccination and routine sexual-health screening still matter.
